EU Borders: Potential Road Freight Disruption Sep 14th

The Serbian Association of International Road Hauliers has officially announced a protest starting at 00:00 on 14 September, involving the suspension of road freight operations at border crossings towards the EU. Transport operators from Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and North Macedonia are expected to participate.

The protest is related to the application of the Schengen 90/180-day rule to professional drivers. According to the association, drivers from the Western Balkans continue to face restrictions, including being turned back at Schengen borders. The association is calling for a solution that recognizes the specific requirements of professional road freight drivers.

The announced action includes a suspension of freight transport at entry and exit terminals of major border crossings, as well as stoppages on roads leading to smaller crossings. The protest is also expected to affect the intermodal terminal at the Port of Novi Sad. According to the association, the action will continue until an adequate solution is proposed. 

Expected impact on supply chains

Companies shipping goods between the Western Balkans and the EU should prepare for longer transit times, delays and possible disruptions to regular road freight schedules.

If road capacity becomes unavailable or severely restricted, we also expect increased demand for air freight and rail/intermodal solutions. This shift may put additional pressure on available capacity and could lead to delays and backlogs at airports and intermodal terminals.
