Cargomind Goes Electric with E-Trucks

Cargomind is taking the next step toward electric mobility. In September, the company will begin operating its first two electric trucks on regional distribution routes across Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland. Four more trucks will follow in 2027 and will be used not only for regional distribution, but also for routes connecting Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg. Once all six trucks are in operation, they are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 220 metric tons per year.

Cargomind has been exploring electric mobility for some time. The latest generation of vehicles ultimately made the transition viable: longer ranges, increasingly mature technology, and available government incentives now provide the conditions needed to effectively integrate electric trucks into day-to-day operations.

“The latest generation of electric trucks now offers the range we need for our daily operations. Combined with the available incentives, it became clear to us that now is the right time to take the next step and begin electrifying our fleet,” said Bernhard Huber, Managing Director of Cargomind Logistik GmbH.

Vienna as the Starting Point

Cargomind deliberately chose Vienna and the surrounding region as its starting point. The shorter driving distances provide ideal conditions for gaining hands-on experience with the vehicles. Before ordering the electric trucks, the company carefully analyzed its existing routes and compared daily mileage with the vehicles’ range. This allowed the trucks to be configured specifically for the requirements of everyday operations.

At the same time, Cargomind is installing the necessary charging infrastructure at its Vienna location. The first phase will include four charging stations with a total of eight charging points. A battery storage system will also enable the storage of excess electricity generated by the site’s solar panels for later use in charging the vehicles. Additional fast-charging stations are planned for Vienna and Salzburg.

Gaining Experience Before Market Changes

The growing importance of zero-emission transportation is becoming apparent. Some customers are requesting carbon-free transportation solutions as part of their tenders. At the same time, a number of major European cities are pursuing projects and initiatives aimed at transitioning more urban traffic to electric vehicles by 2030. For Cargomind, this makes it essential to start the transition well before these changes take effect.

"When the conditions in cities change, we don't want to still be figuring out electric mobility. We want to have gained the necessary experience and be ready to offer our customers the right transportation solutions by then,” said Bernhard Huber.

The six electric trucks represent more than just a first step toward a lower-emission fleet. They are also an important real-world test for the broader transition ahead. Day-to-day operations will provide valuable insights into range, charging strategies, and the use of electric trucks on longer routes. If the vehicles perform as expected, Cargomind plans to continue electrifying its fleet. The long-term goal is to transition the entire Austrian fleet to electric trucks within the next three to five years.
